Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as happy gas or laughing gas, is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and delivered to patients through a small mask that fits over their nose to help them relax during a dental treatment. It was first discovered in 1793 by the English scientist Joseph Priestly and has been used for more than 15 years, making it one of the most widely used anesthetic in both dental and medical settings. Also known as dinitrogen oxide, it is a colorless and nonflammable gas with slight dose of sweet odor and taste.
